 Degree Requirements and Policies for the PhD Program

 
1.      Time Limit:
(1) Students have between two and seven years to finish the PhD program requirements.
(2) Students who fail to finish the PhD program requirements within the stipulated time period must withdraw from the program.
 
2.      Program Requirements:
(1) A total of 24 credit hours are required for graduation. The PhD dissertation does not count toward the total number of required credits.
(2) With approval from the department director and the student’s dissertation advisor, PhD candidates may apply to study abroad. Only six course credits from overseas institutions can be applied to the total number of required credits.

 
3.      Qualifying Examinations:
(1) Qualifying examinations are handled in accordance with the “Regulations Governing Doctoral and Master Degree Qualifying Examinations.”
 
4.      Advisors and the Dissertation Committee:
(1) Students should choose a dissertation advisor soon after passing the qualifying examination. The advisor must be a full-time faculty member from the Department of Economics.
(2) The advisor must recommend two additional committee members with related expertise to form a dissertation committee. The committee is responsible for supervising the student's dissertation.
(3) If a student wishes to change his/her advisor, written permission is required from both the original and new advisors. The change requires authorization from the Graduate Student Evaluation Committee and the department director.
 
5.      Dissertation Proposal:
(1) After completing the course requirements, students must submit an application for the dissertation proposal oral examination. Applications require authorization from the student’s advisor and the dissertation committee and should be submitted one month prior to the date of the dissertation proposal oral examination.
(2) The score of the dissertation proposal oral examination is calculated by averaging the points given by the participating committee members; the passing score is 70 points.
 
6.      Degree Examination:
(1) Applications for degree examinations require authorization from the student’s advisor and should be submitted two months prior to the date of the degree examination.
(2) After registering for the degree examination, the Graduate Student Evaluation Committee shall recommend five to nine committee members to form a degree examination committee. The chairperson of the committee shall be appointed by the president of Feng Chia University; the student’s dissertation advisor cannot serve as chairperson of the committee. The degree examination committee shall be composed of a minimum of five committee members. The score of degree examination is calculated by averaging the points given by the participating committee members; the passing score is 70 points.
(3) Those students who do not pass the degree examination may apply to take the examination again in the following semester/academic year; the degree examination can be retaken only once. Those who do not pass the second time must withdraw from the program. 
 
7.      Revision:
These regulations were adopted during a departmental affairs meeting, ratified by the president of Feng Chia University, and promulgated. Revisions shall be handled in the same manner.
