The principle objective of the Department of Economics is to provide students with a comprehensive understanding of economics and commerce, as well as to prepare students for careers in the economic and business professions.

Following Taiwan’s economic miracle in the 1970s, most universities expanded their economics departments due to significant student demand. Undergraduate economic degrees provided employment opportunities in both the private and public sectors. In addition, many firms, including financial institutions, large manufacturing companies, and trading companies, actively sought out economics majors. In 1976, graduate courses were added to the department in order to meet the expanded demand for advanced economic study. By providing exceptional opportunities for graduate study and research, the Master’s program has been a tremendous success. In 2001, to further advance economic research, the department established a doctoral program in economics.
