The courses of the Institute are classified into two major areas—elective and required. The required courses emphasize basic principles and methods to equip students with the basic ability to engage in advanced cognition studies. Electives are based on the expertise of our faculty and student interests and combine theory and practical experience to study professional topics to upgrade the quality of policy planning and academic theories. The degree programs of the institute can normally be completed in 2 to 4 years of study. It is mandatory to complete 30 credits for the MS degree, including 12 credit hours of required courses and 18 credit hours of electives. The maximum number of credits that can be taken each semester is 10, and a thesis is required. The exemption of courses shall be limited to 12 credit hours. The required courses and their credit hours are as follows: Public Policy Research Topics, 3; Public Policy and Budgeting, 3; Social Analysis of Public Policy, 3; and Research Design and Thesis, 3. The institute’s library offers professional books and periodicals in both Chinese and foreign languages. The Policy Discussion Room is for use by our students, local specialists and overseas policy professionals to carry out policy discussions. The Policy Research Center is under planning and is expected to be operational in the next 3 to 5 years. The purpose of this center is to focus on national and world issues to increase the involvement of our university in the local community and society. We will also accept research projects from outside organizations.
